ThyroidThe thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ in the throat located below the larynx (voice box). Its main job is to store iodine, and to form the iodine-containing hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine as well as another hormone called calcitonin.

Thryoid hormones control many body functions including metabolic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, nervous system and muscular functions, as well as the natural breakdown of bone. To maintain normal thyroid function, it is important to ensure an adequate dietary intake of iodine (e.g. sea fish). In iodine deficient regions, the use of iodized salt may help prevent deficiency.

Apart from iodine deficiency, there are number of thyroid conditions that may lead to thyroid hormone metabolic disorders.

Disorders of thyroid function affect many thousands of people. The problem may be an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), depending on the nature of the condition. These disorders often result in disturbances that may affect the nervous system and mental health, the gastro-intestinal tract or general metabolic processes of affected people.
