HIV and AIDS have affected hundreds of millions of people, through infection and death. The economies of some African nations have ground to a halt because of the hight infection rate. In Swaziland and Namibia, the life expectancy hovers under 40 years. The main means of transmission in most of the world is still heterosexual activity, although in North America homosexual activity and the sharing of needles during intravenous drug use have once again become equally serious problems.
